Wyndrose Working Dogs
Purpose-bred working dogs · Australia

Exceptional dogs. Exceptional handlers.

We breed and develop working Springer Spaniels for detection and tracking — and we teach the handlers who work alongside them.

Who we are

Everything begins with the dog — bred with work in mind, capable of meaningful work, and a pleasure to live with.

Wyndrose is a purpose-bred working dog and education programme built around operational outcomes, handler development and long-term breed improvement.

Our dogs work today across detection and tracking — in conservation, government, law enforcement and private operations. Those placements return the real-world feedback that sharpens every breeding and training decision we make.

Our philosophy

Three principles guide everything we do.

01

Purpose

Every dog is bred with work in mind. We build functional drive, sound temperament and genuine capability — the qualities that hold up when the work is real.

02

Partnership

A great dog is developed alongside a great handler. We train for a dog that works on cue, with heart and soul, and we teach the people who work beside them.

03

Performance

Our standard is real-world performance. Dogs should understand their job, enjoy it, and do it confidently and reliably — never at the expense of welfare.

Great dogs are developed, not discovered.

The Wyndrose approach
Our dogs

The dogs are the proof.

Our dogs are what make everything else worth listening to — proof that the philosophy holds up in the field.

The foundation litter — Wentlooge Yanco × Winifred of Burke — has placed dogs into detection and conservation work and specialist working homes. It remains the benchmark future generations are measured against.

Sam McGregor.

Founder & head trainer · NePoPo® Gold School Graduate

Sam is the founder of Wyndrose Working Dogs and the trainer behind its dogs. His history in working dogs runs deep: he has worked in private detection roles and spent years breeding, training and placing Malinois and German Shepherds for detection, tracking and apprehension work — before turning his focus to working Springer Spaniels, the breed behind Winnie, Hugo and Hamish, whom he has developed from selection through to detection work and operational placement.

His approach is dog-first and systems-based. Rather than copying drills, he builds the dog first — clarity, drive and understanding — then channels that into detection. The belief underneath everything: great dogs are developed, not discovered, and welfare is never traded for performance.

A lawyer and MBA by background, with formal negotiation training from Harvard Business School, Sam thinks in systems and frameworks that lead to proven outcomes — and he approaches dog training the same way: as a problem to be understood, not a set of tricks to be drilled. It is an unusual lens in the dog world, and it is the thread running through the Operant Detection Dog framework he teaches.

The programme

We teach people. The dogs make it worth listening to.

Four strands hold the work together. Each one strengthens the others — and compounds over decades.

One

Working dogs

Purpose-bred Springer Spaniels for detection, conservation, gundog and operational work. The foundation — and the proof — for everything else.

Two

Education

Seminars, workshops and coaching that help handlers build better dogs and better systems. This is the heart of what we do.

Three

Community

A community of handlers, competitors, trainers and breeders — learning together and raising the standard through trust and shared experience.

Four

Knowledge that lasts

Turning hard-won experience into training systems and methods others can learn from — so what we discover keeps helping dogs and handlers long after the work is done.

Every breeding decision should answer one question: does this improve the next generation?

Where our dogs work

Two disciplines. Many arenas.

Our dogs do two things — detect and track. Where they do it is what sets the work apart.

Education

The point is not simply to train dogs. It is to teach people.

We simplify complex ideas into practical systems handlers can apply immediately. Our training is led by Sam McGregor, a NePoPo® Gold School Graduate, and draws on contemporary learning theory, reward-based systems and NePoPo® principles — aimed always at a dog that actively wants to participate in the work.
